PROJECT REBUILD

PREVIOUS TENANTS

cracks in the foundation

If this mugginess thickened a bit we
could swim mid-air; an easy backstroke
to the grocery store, float the bags home,

raft up at Home Hardware. keeps ahold, Sweet,
of that packet of screws unless you're very
deft at pearl diving. bright. world's dried, but oak's
fallen, pitched like a room, like heat stroke.
front yard trees should not play dead. bad, bad tree.

see the cement, its cracks like eyelashes,
wept seepage. whose failure, cure? rain
its run from its drip to its drip bargains
between washout and damp, mould. the hushes
of failure brushes our teeth with us, roots
in our gums, takes over our smiles, fails. mute.
